Good Cause Spotlight: Melton Mowbray Town Estate

One of the good causes you can choose to support when playing Melton Community Lottery is The Melton Mowbray Town Estate, a charity with a mission statement of aiming to enhance the community life of the inhabitants of Melton Mowbray by providing parks, sports grounds and other amenities.

Since its formation in 1549, The Town Estate has continued to have a positive influence on the residents of Melton Mowbray, however it could be argued that many citizens are unaware of its role and the advantages that it provides to them.

Upon its foundation up until 1894, The Town Estate was seen as the ‘premier local authority’ and carried out all the functions that are now carried out by the local authorities we are more familiar with today, such as; educating children, maintaining the structure of the towns road, maintaining churches clocks and chimes and even providing street lighting. In addition to this, since 1850 they have also been running the weekly street markets, which have become synonymous with Melton itself, that take place in the centre of town every Tuesday and Saturday, as well as special markets, such as craft markets which take place two or three times a year.   

To this day, the Melton Mowbray Town Estate own and maintain numerous parks, playing fields, public gardens, sports grounds and amenities around Melton Mowbray for the benefit of the local residents and visitors. This makes it the largest sports provider in the Borough of Melton.

The charities primary objectives include; the maintenance and preservation of parks and the nature that grows there as well as rivers, canal banks and any buildings associated with the estate; and the support of the advancement of sport in the way of sporting facilities, with the goal of extending this to include facilities for youth.

It has been said that for its size Melton Mowbray has a vast amount of parks, public gardens, playing fields, sports grounds and amenities, all of which the Melton Mowbray Town Estate care for to ensure that residents don’t have an extra charge on their council tax.

The charity have chosen to sign up to the Melton Community Lottery to enable them to get extra financial support so that they can undertake larger projects which will benefit the community as a whole and by supporting them when buying your ticket, you can help make this happen.
